Radiofrequency lesioning is a minimally invasive procedure which can be helpful in patients with neck and back pain who have not responded to any other therapeutic measures such as epidural steroid injections or nerve blocks.  . Radiofrequency lesioning uses radiofrequency energy to destroy damaged nerves or nervous tissues that are sending pain signals to the brain.

Favorable conditions for radiofrequency lesioning:

  • The table and an x-ray device which is called a fluoroscope ensures accurate needle placement during the procedure.
  • An intravenous line will be administered for conscious sedation and minimal discomfort.
  • A numbing medication will also be injected into the skin before radiofrequency lesioning.
  • Once the operation site is numb, the radiofrequency needle will be inserted into the skin into targeted nerves.
  • The electrode has been placed on the targeted nerve and then a radiofrequency generator will deliver radiowaves to heat the electrodes and then heat the damaged nerves for up to 90 seconds. This will help destroy the damaged nerves and prevent pain signals from being sent through the spinal cord to the brain.
  • Operation site will be closed when all of the targeted nerves have been treated.

The procedure will take from 45 minutes to half an hour to complete. Any discomfort at the needle placement sites will usually subsides over the next several days.

Spinal disc herniation is an injury in which t connective and cushioning tissue between vertebrae become injured. Treatment of spinal disc herniation depends upon the severity of symptoms and nerve damage.  In many cases, medication management and quality physical therapy may be enough to allow your body to heal.

  • Medications; these may involve steroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), pain medications, and muscle relaxers to help control symptoms and reduce inflammation.
  • Physical therapy; improves mobility and strength, and helping achieve daily activities with greater ease and ability
  • Epidural steroid injection; when other conservative measures do not work then epidural steroid injection would become a treatment option for spinal disc herniation. Injection contain small amount of cortisone which injected into the spinal canal which may decrease nerve inflammation and ease pain caused by irritated nerve roots.

Facet joint block is a minimally invasive procedure to provide pain relief in facet joint. Facet block injections are injected into one or more of the small joints located along the side of each vertebrae on both sides of the spine in the lower part of the back to help reduce pain. It reduces inflammation and provides long term lower back pain relief.

Objective of facet block injections:

There are two major goals of facet block injections;

  • Help diagnose the cause and location of pain
  • To provide pain relief

By placing numbing medicine into the facet joint, doctor will determine if the facet joint is a source of pain.


The facet block injection procedure includes following steps;

  • At first, skin over the area to be tested is well cleansed with a numbing medicine which may sting for a few seconds.
  • X-ray guidance or fluoroscopy has been used by the physician to direct a very small needle into the facet joint
  • Small amount of contrast dye is then injected to confirm that the needle is in the joint and to check that the medication is contained inside the joint
